Whether your puppy is already home or you’re still counting down the days until go-home day, you’re probably wondering:
What do I actually need to survive this first year?

And friend, I get it. The first year of puppy parenthood is a beautiful mess of cuddles, chaos, and “oh no, what’s in your mouth?!” moments.

Let’s break down what really matters, so you (and your puppy!) can thrive.

🧸 1. Start with the basics that work

Yes, the internet is filled with must-haves, but you only need a few quality items to get started:

Pro tip: Keep things simple and high-quality—puppies grow fast, and cheap gear won't keep up.

🧠 2. Socialization is everything

Your puppy has a window of time (around 3–16 weeks) when they’re especially open to new experiences.
This is your chance to show them the world in a safe, fun way:

  • Meet friendly dogs and people
  • Walk on different surfaces (yes, even grass that makes them do the bunny hop)
  • Hear everyday sounds like vacuums, skateboards, and doorbells

The goal? A confident pup who’s not afraid of the world.

💩 3. Potty training & routine = your best friends

Routine is your secret weapon. Feeding, potty breaks, nap times—it all helps your pup learn what’s expected.
And if accidents happen? You’re not failing. You’re just raising a baby animal who’s still figuring it out.

❤️ 4. Don’t forget you matter too

Let’s be honest: puppy parenthood is no joke. It’s exhausting, overwhelming, and sometimes you’ll cry in the laundry room (or was that just me?).
But you’re doing amazing—even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

Be kind to yourself. Ask for help. And know you’re not alone.
